Competition within GMS? If you
are
good at what you do, Don't worry about
that! |
| From the Desk of Marvin
Ellis: |
|
As
President of GMS, I bring with me many theories about
business from
my own personal experience. My thoughts
have gradually
evolved into the building blocks we stand on today. By
now, it
should be obvious to most that my belief that
relationships
are key to business success is a cornerstone of
GMS. It never ceases to amaze me how many try
to grow and "fight the tide" alone. I say
Network, Network, Network! Lets fight
together!
My feelings about competition are just
as
strong. I wish I had a dollar for every time I have
heard a
business owner ask about why we have "competitors" or
"like
businesses" in The GMS Network. Although I understand
why the
question is raised, I am again amazed at the fear that
some have
concerning this matter.
The number one reason GMS has
a "no
exclusivity" policy is because it would severely limit
the
number of members in The Network. This is bad for
GMS, but
more importantly bad for you as a member. Why?
Because
it would limit the total amount of potential customers
that could
utilize you by over 65%!
The second reason
is
because The Network and our community wants and deserve
choices. When you go to a grocery store, do you want
a
selection of cereal or do you want just one product and one
producer? If you went to a store with only one brand,
would
you continue to shop there? Of course not. You
demand a
selection. Not only that, it would be bad for the
cereal
companies as well. Top manufactures actually make like
products to compete with themselves as it is proven
to
INCREASE sales, not the other way around. Choice is
good for
business!
Third, not every business specializes in the
same
service, even though they are in the same field. For
instance,
our attorneys in GMS have a wide array of specialties
within the
"Legal" market. Again, customers need
options.
Finally, and to me most important,
competition
should only be a scary thing for businesses that are not
of high quality. I know this may not sit well
with
some, but quality business owners do not worry about their
competition... they focus on their customers! I
can't help
but remember the scene in the movie "Coming to America"
when
the owner of McDowels was so worried about McDonalds that
he even
had their business operations manual hidden in his
desk.
I think our wide selection of
services is a strength and if you have businesses in the
same
field as yours don't look at them as competitors,
view them
as potential compliments to your business. Reach out to
them
and see if there are ways in which you can work
together strategically such as referring "overflow"
business or "out of the area" business to one another.
Keep in mind, GMS has eight Business
Networking
Organizations within The Network as well as ten graphic
designers!

2 Tickets to the New York Giants Home
Opener! They wrote us this...
|
|
"Sometimes we
become so
busy trying to build business that we forget to say ?Thank
You?.
It isn't often that you enter into a business
relationship
where the entire team is pleasant and inspiring to work with.
The GMS team is exactly that. I look forwarded to GMS
events
and truly enjoy meeting other GMS members.
Paymedia
lives by four basic business principles, we strive to be
Flexible,
Reliable, Accountable and Personable. I
have found
Marc, Irina and Marvin to be those things with the addition
of
generous.
Recently I won the monthly contest and GMS
generously
sent me to the Giants home opener. I spent a wonderful
afternoon with my nephew watching football.
Unfortunately GMS
couldn't arrange for the Giants to win but it was a fun
day. So ?Thank You? GMS!" Ron Valvano, Paymedia
Hey

GMS and
Motocross???
Huh... I don't get it!
Just so everyone knows, Motocross is not essential
to
business growth. However, enjoying what you do
for a
living is!
Our GMS Racing Team is an extension
of
how we like to live. "Work hard, play hard" has
always
been a favorite slogan of mine. If we are going to play
hard, why not wave the GMS flag at the same time?
GMS is a
way of life for us and we are very proud of
The
Network, those in it, and the philosophy behind it.
The
relationships are priceless and without you and your
support,
none of this would be possible.
Every chance we
get,
whether in the office or at the track, we keep the
logos viewable because we are proud of you and passionate
about
small businesses!
"If you enjoy what you do for a
living, you
will never work a day in your life!" - Michael
